Beginning 2018, the Joint Entrance Examination (Advance) will be conducted in an entirely computer-based test (CBT) mode.
Giving students the opportunity to change their answers, the new format, which was conducted in offline format until now, will also give them extra time, in case their computers suffer from any technical issues.
IIT Kanpur, which organises the yearly entrance exam for admissions into the esteemed IITs, Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, has scheduled the test for May 20, 2018.
“The online mode of examination is being introduced to make logistics and evaluation process easy. Candidates who do not have access to desktops can even practice on their smartphones. The examination will start at 9 am, and the computer screen will automatically display the message—I am ready to begin,” a senior official at IIT Kanpur told The New Indian Express.
Over 2.24 lakh students will be reportedly taking the test which will be their gateway to the 11,032 seats of Bachelor’s, Integrated Masters and Dual Degree programs in all the 23 IITs.
On the other hand, JEE Main, which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), concedes with the option of attending the exam in either online or offline mode, giving students the choice of taking the format that they are comfortable with.
Candidates clearing the JEE-Mains will be given the training to use the CBT system for JEE Advance through mock tests. A dedicated website to serve this purpose has been launched on Tuesday.

The best part of the online facility is that it will give candidates the option of changing their answers using the mouse at the designated centres as well as revise their answers. It also includes the provision of closing each section upon its completion by the applicant. The exam typically comprises of three segments, covering mathematics, physics and chemistry.
“In case of any problem, the computer will stop, and the watch at the computer screen will also automatically get stopped. Later, the candidates will be given extra time as per the time loss shown by the computer watch”, said Ashok Misra, who is the honorary chairperson of joint admission board (JAB) of IITs.
Until now, the JEE Advance exam included the Optical Mark Reading (OMR) answering system like most entrance exams, under which a student has to mark their answers in a ‘block’ which cannot be changed.
