The Indian Railways seems to be getting really serious about cutting power consumption. To adopt yet another eco-friendly measure, the transport giant on Tuesday announced its plan to make all stations 100 percent LED lit by March 31, 2018
Under the move, all railway staff colonies, stations and platforms will be lit using power saving LED lights.
“Ministry of Railways has decided to make all railway stations 100 per cent LED lit by the end of current financial year by March 31, 2018. It is a huge initiative to provide energy efficient lighting which will eventually greatly help in the conservation of environment as well,” a statement issued by the Railways said according to a TOI report.
The use of light-emitting diode (LED) is considered one of the most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies. These lights not only last longer, but are more durable, and offer comparable or sometimes even better light quality than other types of lighting.
LEDs use 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting and emit very little heat compared to traditional lamps. While incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80%.
The Railways has already installed over 20 lakh LED lights in over 3,500 railway stations up until November 2017.
The LED lighting move will not only reduce over 10% of the total energy consumed for its non-traction uses, but save over 240 million units of electricity, in turn helping the Indian Railways save a whopping budget of Rs 180 crore per year.

Zonal Railways have already been directed to adopt LED lights in residential quarters. Under the government’s Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) Scheme earlier this year, the Zonal Railways distributed over 20 lakh LED lights to railway staff till October, 2017 mentions the report.
The plan of action also includes installing the lights in all coaches/EMUs. To promote the installation of LED lights, the Railways also converted the lighting in 1300 non-AC second-class and 3-tier sleeper coaches to LED.
