December 2nd, 2017 marked the formation of a notorious storm which caused devastation along India’s coast. It was named Cyclone Ockhi, meaning “eye” in Bengali.
The name of this violent storm was courtesy of Bangladesh, part of a unique system of naming cyclones in the North Indian Ocean area. When a storm hits, and has ravaged its way to becoming a cyclone, that is when the Indian Meteorological Department gives it a name, for ease of communication and convenience.
According to the system, the next cyclone to hit our shores will be named Sagar, meaning “ocean”, a name submitted by India.
