She co-founded Lumme Labs in November 2015, which is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded company started by a team of scientists from UMass and Yale.

Their mission was to develop an effective quit program for smokers by combining wearable sensors, data analytics, and behavioural psychology. They wanted to help people with addiction quit using technology that is scalable, affordable, and personalised.

The wearable device, which is in the form of a smartwatch, senses the smoker’s behaviour, social interactions and movements and predicts a likely relapse. It sends them a notification six minutes before they are likely to smoke by telling them not to light the cigarette.

Lumme has raised $1.7 million in non-dilutive funding. Their technology is yet to be clinically validated and is likely to enter the market next year. Akshaya hopes this could be included in corporate companies as part of their employee wellness programmes.

After getting selected on Forbes’ list, Akshaya expressed her joy on social media by writing, “It is an absolute honor to be on the Forbes 30 under 30 in Healthcare along with game changers and visionaries in the field!”
