The State Policy for Transgenders, 2017, has been cleared by the Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday, which will help protect the community from facing discrimination and bring them into the mainstream.
A cell will be established to oversee the implementation of the policy. It will work towards providing a conducive environment for transgender individuals through welfare programmes, reports The Hindu.
Through this policy, counselling centres will be put up to address discrimination and exploitation cases against the community, along with identification and certification.
It also suggests improvements that can be made in employment, health and education.
“The State’s transgender policy is in line with the Supreme Court direction, which on April 15, 2014, directed all the States to come up with a policy to protect the third gender,” said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra during his post Cabinet briefing, reports The Hindu.
He added that the policy would address the community’s insecurity and suicidal tendencies, and also prevent harassment faced by them. They will be provided reservation in education and will be included in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, RTE and efforts to promote literacy and reduce dropouts.
The syllabus too will be revised so that it includes gender diversity. Counselling and hormone therapy will also be provided. Scholarship for children, neutral uniform and common toilets are also being thought over. The policy will also provide free sex assignment surgery for trans individuals, which will be a great step in their inclusivity.
