Applying for a Driver’s Licence? Get Ready to Give an Automated Driving Test in Delhi

To get a driver’s licence issued in Delhi, you don’t always have to take the legal route. If you’re ready to pay up, there are ways by which you can avoid giving the tests altogether.

This is dangerous and especially risky as there is no surety that the driver has the adequate skill to be able to drive on the roads.

To stop these corruptive practices in Motor Licencing Offices across the city, the Delhi Transport Department has decided to introduce technology-based automated tests before issuing a driver’s licence. They plan to introduce these by mid-2018, reports The Hindu.

They have identified land where the testing tracks can be constructed near all the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the city.

Dwarka and south-west Delhi are so far out of the list. Each testing track will cost ₹1 crore to be constructed.

The testing tracks will be equipped with CCTV cameras, along with cameras on the driver’s dashboard. A special computer hardware will also be attached to test the driver’s skill.

“Different teams tasked with studying similar systems already in operation in different cities such as Bengaluru are in the process of submitting their recommendations on the proposed system, following which it will be implemented,” a senior government official told The Hindu, adding, “Land required for the project in Dwarka too is expected to be finalised soon. We expect the system to be in place by June 2018.”

He also said that the idea behind introducing this test is to reduce human interaction at the RTOs.
