After Complaints, Railways Might Slash Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi Fares

When the Ministry of Railways introduced the flexi-fare ticketing system for Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi trains last year on September 9, it received several complaints from passengers who weren’t happy with the high ticket fares.

The scheme lets 10% of the seats to be sold at the normal fare, and after that increases it in phases by 10% with every 10% of berths sold, with a ceiling of a 50% rise.

After the issue was brought to the notice of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, he decided to improve it in a way that it meets the revenue target, and at the same time, doesn’t burn a hole in the passengers’ pockets, reports The Times of India.

It was also noticed that a number of seats were left vacant due to the high fares.

Hence, in December last year, the Railways decided to provide 10% rebate on any seat left vacant, once the chart was prepared. But that wasn’t enough.

Through this scheme, the Railways has earned ₹540 crore from September 2016 to June 2017. As of now, they’re reviewing the flexi-fare system and may slash the ticket prices of the elite trains.

The Railway Minister also told TOI that they’re working on ensuring faster and more efficient services. “It is proposed to increase the speed of around 700 trains with effect from November 1, 2017. This exercise will help in converting 48 mail/express trains to the superfast/express category,” he told the publication.

According to reports, more than 100 train services will be launched from Mumbai between October 1 and November 1.
