In a first-of-its-kind decision, the Delhi High Court hired five acid attack survivors and a transgender person on Wednesday. All of them had faced discrimination and were struggling with finding jobs.
According to The Hindu, the story of their struggle was brought to the notice of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal, after which the six individuals were given clerical jobs according to their qualification.
Earlier this month, the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) had sent a proposal to see if there were any job opportunities for them, after which the Justice spoke to all six of them personally. They were then hired.
Before this, the individuals had approached several government bodies to look for jobs but were never successful in finding one.
They were extremely happy with the High Court’s decision to hire them, reports the publication.
The 29-year-old transgender person was forced to leave her house after her family didn’t accept her gender identity. The acid attack survivors include Nasreen Jahan, 38, a single mother who was attacked by her former husband six months into their divorce, and Sapna, 25, who was attacked by her relative who wanted to marry her.
Most qualified among them was Kamar Jahan, 27, who had a graduate degree and was attacked by her husband’s second wife and relatives. Shobha, 24, was the youngest among them all and Mamta, 29, has studied till class 8, reports The Hindu.
