No More Uncomfortable Khaki, Indian Cop Uniforms to Get a Makeover Soon!

Their current uniforms are anything but smart and come with a list of issues. The new ones, however, seem promising and are visually appealing too!

No More Uncomfortable Khaki, Indian Cop Uniforms to Get a Makeover Soon!

The uniforms of police officers in India are really problematic. Lack of uniformity is one. The basic fit and colour differ across the country. Strangely, the fabric of the shirt and trousers is the same thickness, which is uncomfortable during summers. Plus, it’s not useful for cops when it comes to carrying objects like batons, keys etc.

Also, the caps they wear are uncomfortable as they’re made of wool, and helmets are too heavy.

Their shoes are made of leather and are supremely uncomfortable when worn for long hours.

The list is long.

But the good news is, their British-era khaki is going to change, Times of India has reported. After five years of research, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, has suggested nine designs of smart, all-weather designer uniforms, one of which will become the standard uniform for cops across the country.

These nine prototypes have been designed in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). They include ‘shirts, trousers, belts, berets, insignia, shoes and jacket, apart from new rainwear and headgear for the law enforcers’, ToI reported. The state police forces and paramilitary forces will soon decide on one which suits them best.

“There was a lot of criticism of the khaki, and how its colour, fabric and pattern should be changed. The uniform worn by the police till now wasn’t made for different climates, altitudes. NID and BPR&D spent a lot of time to find an alternative and an intensive report has been prepared,” Meera Borwankar, director general BPR&D, told TOI.
