Find out Where Water From This Village in Haryana Goes (Hint: Not the Drains)

Basada village in Samalkha, Panipat, has a rather impressive dry drainage system, where used water from bathrooms and kitchens goes straight to a covered pit. This water management system has caught the attention of the central team of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and Haryana’s delegation are all set to study it.

Every household in Basada has these drying pits, which makes it the first village to do so. The pits are 3ft wide and 4ft deep, with a smaller 1ft pit for filtering water first.

The cost of this dry drainage system, which is covered by MGNREGA funds, is ₹5,000.

In May this year, the Word Bank organised a trip for the Haryana team to go to Maharashtra and Kerala and study this model, where it is already functional. According to Financial Express, Haryana CM, Manohar Lal Khattar, wants two villages from every district to implement this water management project.

The dry pit system can only work on soil that can soak water. Thanks to this system, there are close to no mosquitoes or flies in the village anymore.

What’s more is the villagers know fairly well how to manage their waste. There is a door-to-door waste collection system, and every household contributes ₹1 for this every day. The two projects were started by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Panipat, Rajiv Mehta, two months ago.
