A district magistrate in Uttar Pradesh is donning roles that don’t curtail to law enforcement duties alone, and is setting more than one inspiration-worthy example.
Yogeshwar Ram Mishra, who is the district magistrate of Varanasi, had adopted an upper primary school in Orderly Bazar last month.
“I adopted the school to improve the quality of education. As a part of the initiative, I teach students for about an hour every week. There is tremendous improvement in the knowledge and confidence of the students,” Yogeshwar told HT. Teaching arithmetic, English and science to children from standard 1 to 8 every Saturday, he tries to keep his classes as interactive as possible for maximum engagement.
Interestingly, there is no strict timetable for his classes. Entering classrooms at random, Yogeshwar takes the students’ choice into account and teaches them whatever they wish to study. He also kindles conversations over the importance of plants and trees amid students and encourages them to plant saplings in the school premises.
“Improving quality in primary and upper primary schools may be a challenge, but is not impossible. It can be improved with little efforts,” he said.
Engaging children through a friendly banter, Yogeshwar also makes it a point to talk to them on topics apart from studies.“Children interact with me and sometimes ask questions related to cricket and history. It is great to see that my effort has boosted the confidence of the students,” he added.
In a school with an enrollment of 53 students, Yogeshwar found that many children wanted to speak English. In order to provide them the exposure, he has charted out plans of taking them to the movies in the coming weeks.

Previously, the school lacked even the basic infrastructure. After Mishra’s intervention, a corporate company has taken interest towards refurbishing the school as part of its CSR activities, and plans on painting the school’s walls and beautify its premises. Concurrently, Mishra is working towards making schools digitally equipped with facilities like a mini-lab and projectors.
