When was the last time you spontaneously went to a friend’s house just to say hello, instead of virtually checking in on them?

Or left your phone at home whilst you went for an evening walk, just for the simple pleasure of it?

We are all guilty of getting so caught up in the online world that we often neglect the small pleasures found in everyday living. Sometimes we forget that a whole other world exists beyond the devices permanently perched within just an arm’s reach, a world that is full of real people and real experiences.

A 79-year-old retired banker’s message to the world, captured by the Humans of Bombay project, has managed to snag the ever evasive attention of social media users and got them thinking.

His message encouraging us to step away from our phones, and reacquaint ourselves with the simple things in life, has not only managed to catch our attention, it has caught our hearts a little bit too.

“In my time, I had a successful career as the Bank Manager at Union bank for over 23 years. I’ve retired now and I’m on a pension of a few thousand Rupees a month, which may not seem like a lot — but believe me it is. Unfortunately, it’s only once you stop working that you realise that happiness can’t be bought. I’m 79, and it’s only now that I’m finding things that give me that peace and happiness. Spending time with my wife and daughter, my walks here everyday, the sea, the shore, the little Ganpati Mandir on the banks that I like to visit when the tide is low…all of these bring me so much joy.”
“So what advice would you give to a large group of people?”
“Leave this mobile phone of yours on the side for sometime — just do nothing — sit near the sea, just be…just breathe.”
