RK Laxman’s Granddaughter Has Introduced the ‘Common Woman’. And We’re Excited!
The character of the Common Woman was introduced on World Cartoonist Day, celebrated on May 5.
For decades he was a mainstay of our lives. The nameless spectator. The silent witness to a world sometimes driven by corruption, greed and bigotry. And for decades, he was also our collective conscience. That was the power of famed cartoonist R K Laxman, who used his character, the ‘Common Man,’ to make searing commentary on society as it exists.
And the world of the Common Man is getting an important addition – the Common Woman.
Laxman’s own granddaughter, Rimanika Laxman, will be at the helm of creating and executive a brand-new take on the iconic character. RK IPR Management, a group that was founded by Laxman, has noted that this new character will show the perspective of a woman in society and the cartoon strip will tackle gender issues.The series will be titled, “Common Man and Common Woman”.
And just like Rimanika herself, the Common Woman is also a granddaughter. In fact, she is the granddaughter of the Common Man.

In a statement to the Indian Express, the foundation has said, “The concept that she has in mind is the granddaughter of the ‘Common Man’, who has also been observing and facing similar situations, not only pertaining to problems related to women in general but with more and more awareness that has come about on the equality of men and women.”
The foundation has released the first image of the new character in their official website. In the image, the Common Man is seen watering a plant and out springs out the Common Woman. This character is said to be a tribute to the iconoclastic Laxman, who passed away in 2015. He had already been privy to the concept of the Common Woman and is said to have even encouraged it.

The introduction of the Common Woman’s character has been timed to coincide with World Cartoonist Day, which is celebrated on May 5.
