With Dreams of IIT Bombay and Determination, an Autorickshaw Driver’s Son Scored Big in JEE Main!

Studying in an Indian Institute of Technology is THE dream for many!

Many in India have aspirations of becoming an engineer and have nursed the dream since childhood, probably after being inspired by another who had made it to the IITs, making not just their parents but the entire neighbourhood proud.

With the results for JEE Main being declared on Thursday, 16-year-old Dhananjay Tiwari has scored a great rank and his father Subhashchandra Tiwari, who is an autorickshaw driver from Thane, couldn’t have been more proud of his son’s achievement.

Dhananjay Tiwari scored an all-India rank of 515 and aspires to study in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

“My son has always studied by himself because I could not afford classes. I knew my son will score well but his result has made me extremely proud,” Subhashchandra told Hindustan Times.

And success does not come easily without hardwork and dedication put to testing, even for Dhananjay. He had already made an attempt once, but he was not satisfied since he really wanted to study at IIT-B and figured that he had to work harder. It took him more than one attempt to score this rank.

“In my first attempt, my rank was 3,873 in JEE-Mains. I knew I had to score better to bag a seat at IIT-B so decided to take off a year to study for the exam,” he said to HT.

Dhananjay, who had cleared his HSC in 2016 from Kelkar College, Mulund, had joined a city-based coaching institute where he was taught free of cost to prepare him for his second attempt. A student of Pace Junior Science College in Thane, he had to depend on a lot on his lectures and self-study for preparation.

“This time I was confident about scoring a decent rank and qualifying for JEE (Advanced). I want to get into IIT-Bombay in either mechanical or electrical engineering. I will be the first in my extended family to make it to an IIT if I clear JEE (Advanced). I hope to do well in JEE (Advanced) as well”, he said.

Well, this boy’s strive for success without losing hope is what makes us believe that good things happen to people who persevere.

“I’m glad I chose to re-appear for JEE because this time I’ve bagged the 515 all India rank and I couldn’t be happier,” he added.
