Want to Install Solar Panels in Your Home or Office? ISRO’s New App Will Help You Do That!

The Solar Calculator provides the monthly and yearly solar potential of a region and even tells the user at what angle the panels should be installed to get maximum sunlight.

Want to know install solar panels but aren’t quite sure when to place them in your home and office? The Indian Space Research Organisation has the ideal app that will help you do just that.

ISRO, has developed an android app aptly called Solar Calculator that can automatically asses if a particular geographical location is a good place to install solar panels. The app was developed at the request of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The Solar Calculator, which can be downloaded from the website vedas.sac.gov.in (it is not currently available in Google playstore), provides both monthly and yearly solar potential of a region. In fact, the calculator also suggests the exact angle that a panel has to be placed so it receives maximum sunlight.

In order to access the information, all the user has to do is key in the geographical details or use GPS to determine a location. While also providing the maximum and minimum temperatures of the region, it provides data in three different formats – maps, graphs and tables. One can download the information in a PDF format for further use.

However, the user needs to have an active internet connection for the calculator to work.

The Solar Calculator is able to come to conclusions by processing information and data from Indian Geostationary Satellite, which includes Kalpana- 1, INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR. By using Digital Elevation Model (DEM), it will be able to give an accurate prediction of the obstruction of the sunlight as well.
