To Get to Patients Faster, This Hospital in Delhi Is Also Deploying Bike Paramedics for Emergencies
Since bikes can weave through traffic faster than ambulances, this move will ensure medical attention is provided in a speedy manner.
Like most major cities and towns in India, traffic and congestion on the roads is one of the biggest problems that affects the city of Delhi. This becomes especially problematic when it causes delay in people getting life-saving and timely medical treatment with ambulances getting stuck in traffic.
Recognising this to be a problem that needed to be addressed urgently, one hospital in the city has started a new kind of ambulance service – they send paramedics on motorcycles before the ambulances are dispatched.
Max Healthcare has deployed five paramedic teams that are being sent along with a medical kit that can be utilised to provide preliminary medical care as needed.
The kits will contain an ambu bag, an automatic defibrillator and other portable devices.

Given that bikes can easily maneuver through traffic, this means they will be able to reach patients faster than through most other methods of travel within the city. The hospital also notes that paramedics on bikes are able to reach patients a good 10 to 15 minutes earlier compared to full- fledged ambulances.
Speaking to the Times of India, an official said, “In cases of emergency, every minute’s delay adversely affects the patient’s chances of survival. Bike-borne paramedics support the ambulances by reaching the spot ahead of time and start addressing the patient and enhance the clinical outcomes during medical emergencies, thereby increasing chances of survival.”

According to statistics from Delhi Traffic Police, there are 96,34,976 of registered vehicles in the city and according to an AIIMs doctor quoted in the report, there are only 200 ambulances when there needs to be at least 500 for emergency medical services to be effective in Delhi.
