It’s the incident that had the entire country gasping in unison.
In a bizarre moment, one of the busiest roads in Chennai, called Anna Salai, suddenly caved in, trapping a bus and a car in its wake.
And despite it being a major accident, there were no injuries reported partly because the presence of mind shown by the bus driver who was able to warn the passengers before they were injured.
Speaking to Times of India, the driver, B Gunaseelan, spoke about how he helped 35 of the bus’ passengers to escape unscathed. He said, “I saw the asphalt around the front of the vehicle come apart. Immediately, I asked the passengers to exit the bus. I did not tell them that the road was caving in because the passengers would have panicked.”
The person driving the car, R Pradeep, also did not suffer any injuries. While he couldn’t get out of his car before it fell into the crater, onlookers quickly came to his rescue and were able to pull him out.
Photographs from the incident has captured the imagination of the internet as it has inspired thousands of memes being shared across all social media platforms. Authorities, meanwhile, are working towards ascertaining why the accident took place in the first place.
As for the road itself, authorities have been able to fix it and have even let some traffic to resume. Here’s hoping that this is the last time it happens.
