Sasken Technologies, a Bengaluru-based company, was faced with a conundrum. The company owned a plot of land near its premises and a good portion of it had been left vacant for far too long. One day, CEO Rajiv Mody noted that efforts should be made to make that piece of land a little bit greener.
Today in that very same plot stands a thriving organic vegetable garden that serves as a little haven for its employees.
Not only is the region most certainly greener but its produce gets sold back those who work in the company at discounted rates.

Anees Haidary, senior manager, Business Excellence spoke to Bengaluru Mirror about how the garden was cultivated without any pesticides as the team opts to use sheep manure instead. Anees notes, “The manpower, the quality, whether we’d be able to grow it without pesticides – these were the questions being asked. But this initiative has proven that we have been able to channelise a vacant land into something meaningful, for employees and the environment.”
Once the idea took root, the company quickly went to work to analyse the quality of the soil and also find out which vegetables can be grown in the region. Today, there are carrots, beetroots, spinach, corn among others.

Now, every week, depending on the harvest, the company hosts a small vegetable market where employees can buy what they choose to. And of course, it turns out a good portion of them were inspired by the example set by their respective companies that they have started setting-up kitchen gardens at their very own homes.
