This Police Station in Rajasthan Has an All-Women Staff

Sometimes it takes a woman to comprehend and be sensitive towards a problem that another woman is facing. Banking on just that, Rajasthan has opened a police station that will be staffed entirely by women.

And aptly, this station will be inaugurated on March 8, when the world will celebrate International Women’s Day.

A total of 22 police personnel will be staffed at the station, and that includes the police constables. The station was conceived as a safe space for women who will be able to come and file complaints without feeling awkward or scared. The station will also feature a creche where children who are brought in will be taken care of.

Speaking about this initiative, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kunwar Rastradeep notes that women have to battle a lot of stigma that is both societal and in the mind before approaching a police officer to file a complaint. Bangalore Mirror has quoted him saying, “When a woman comes to file a complaint, there is a stigma in her mind whether a male police officer would understand her problem or he would in turn blame her. Here we are trying that each and every staff is a woman and therefore those women coming to file complaint will feel comfortable. I believe this would be the first police station where each and every staff will be a woman”

Police stations in India are trying to figure out new ways to make people who come to their premises comfortable. Recently a police station in Gurugram started a dedicated play area for children that features games, puzzles and even a nanny. According to data , there are over 500 police stations for women.

Hopefully such stations soon become the rule rather than the exception.
