India’s First Social Innovation Incubator, the Kakatiya Hub, Launched in Telangana

Come September 2017, Nizamabad in Telangana will be home to Kakatiya Hub of Social Innovation, a sprawling campus spread over 50,000 sq. ft that promises to revolutionize rural and social enterprises in the country.

The Telangana government launched Kakatiya Hub on February 5, establishing what it claims to be India’s first social innovation facility.

The operations of the Kakatiya Hub will be led by Kakatiya Sandbox, a non-profit organisation that works to empower the local communities in and around Nizamabad. The 3-year-old organisation was initiated by Raju Reddy, founder and former CEO of Sierra Atlantic and Phanindra Sama, and co-founder of Redbus; it is modelled after Deshpande Foundation’s Hubli Sandbox.

The state’s IT secretary Jayesh Ranjan made the announcement at the Development Dialogue conference in Hyderabad, hosted by Kakatiya Sandbox. Speaking to the press, he said that rural areas face a number of problems and those are often best solved by people who are acquainted with the areas. The establishment of a large-scale facility, offering mentorship and infrastructure, promises to give rural entrepreneurs an opportunity to execute their plans.

In an interview to Times of India, the IT secretary said, “The CM envisioned establishing incubators akin to T-Hub in other districts of the state and this facility, which will be rolled out in a period of six months in Nizamabad, is one of the steps taken towards realizing his vision. The next such facility is likely to come up in Warangal. There are hundreds of problems in rural India that require intelligent solutions. Rural innovations will hence be of tremendous importance to the country.”

The Telangana government also supports a variety of similar facilities around the state, including Hyderabad’s T-Hub said to be the country’s largest incubator for startups.
