Want to Get Fit While Saving the Planet? Take This Solar Powered Bicycle for a Spin!

Given that air pollution is one of the biggest threats to modern society, it has become imperative to find alternative modes of transportation to curb vehicular emissions. In an effort to do the same, a group of scientists from Dr. N. G. P. Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, have developed a unique solar-powered bicycle.

When riding this cycle that has solar panels, one can choose between the motor and the pedals, or even both at the same time.

“If we use solar assisted bicycle, we can reduce overall 60 per cent of all vehicle pollution in our country. A solar panel is mounted on the bicycle carrier. We can use solar panels of any specification, and depending upon the specification of solar panel, energy is produced,” S A Puviyarasu from Dr. N. G. P. Institute of Technology, Anna University, told PTI.

The cycles will be priced between Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 15,000. Riders will be able to customise the cycles like adjusting the solar panel specification and hub motor power according to their needs. Mounted on the front wheel is the motor and the cycle also has a lead acid battery where the solar energy gets stored. A throttle can be used to control the speed of cycle.

Puviyarasu said that these cycles will most probably hit the roads by 2018. For now, the results of the research have been published in the Indian Journal of Science and Technology.
