Transcript:

Khonoma, a unique little village close to Kohima is a 700+ year old settlement of the Angami tribe. The houses are made of mud & bamboo  and  the village is home to perfectly terraced fields.

Unlike the popular practice of slash-&-burn or ‘jhum’, the locals practice their own version of ‘jhum’ by planting Nepalese Alder trees along with the crops. This method solves the problem of soil erosion and instead enriches the environment with nitrogen. In a culture that once thrived on hunting for food and sport, the community is now striving for sustainability and conservation. Thanks to the youth, hunting and tree-cutting is totally banned. Instead around 40 different types of paddy are grown. The trees are trimmed for better growth.

And the community prides themselves of complete self-sustenance!
