A cop from Bangalore drove an ambulance with a baby in a critical condition to the hospital after apprehending the drunk driver
When Bangalore police flagged down an ambulance that was zooming across the city streets in an erratic manner, they were in for a shock — the driver was drunk and there was a baby in critical condition inside the ambulance. This was when constable SN Ravi stepped in and proved that some heroes don’t need capes to save the day. He hopped onto the driver’s seat himself and drove the ambulance to the hospital.
The six days old premature baby was being transported with his parents to the neonatal ICU of Vani Vilas Hospital from Narayana Health City. According to a report in Bangalore Mirror, the incident took place in November this year. Somashekar, a traffic police inspector, said that cops were initially sceptical as to whether there were any passengers inside the ambulance apart from the driver because sometimes “ambulance drivers use the siren to escape the police.”
Upon inspection, not only did they realise that the driver had been erratic despite having a baby on-board, but the baby in question needed immediate care.

Ravi said that his decision was an easy one. “I knew how to drive. So I took the vehicle. It’s scary to think how the drunk man could drive for so many kilometres with a baby at the back.”
The police have arrested the driver and booked him under the Motor Vehicle Act as well as under Section 279 of the IPC. The ambulance was seized after the baby was delivered to the NICU.
