Why Sushma Swaraj Was Selected by US-Based Foreign Policy Magazine as One of 100 ‘Global Thinkers’

Every year, the US-based Foreign Policy magazine brings out a list of 100 global thinkers who are leading the world in different fields of life. The categories include decision makers, challengers, innovators, artists, advocates, stewards, chroniclers, moguls, and healers.

This year, the magazine has included Sushma Swaraj in its list by acknowledging her newly-fashioned brand of ‘Twitter diplomacy’.

Ever since taking charge as India’s External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj has been on a mission to help out Indians in trouble and she has brilliantly used twitter for the cause.

Alongside Swaraj, Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel, Justin Trudeau, Ban Ki Moon as well as Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen have been featured among the 15 decision makers. The magazine has complimented Swaraj for fashioning a ‘novel brand of diplomacy.’

The magazine, after mentioning the disturbing events of the year 2016 like the war in Syria, mass migration, climate change as well as Trump’s win, goes on to assure readers that all is not lost; all is not unwell.

There is also a mention of an episode in which Swaraj helped rescue over 10,000 migrant workers stuck in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait without food and money.

The magazine writes: “In July, Sushma Swaraj, India’s external affairs minister, tweeted to her roughly six million followers that 10,000 Indian workers employed inside the Kingdom faced a food crisis. What followed was a weeks-long social media operation in which Swaraj posted information for migrants about rations provided by the Indian Embassy, claims for unpaid wages, and government-organized transportation home.

Among other Indians, the founders of Sampark Foundation Vineet and Anupama Nayar, Nitesh Kadyan, Nikhil Kaushik and Anirudh Sharma of Graviky Labs and immunologist Gurusaran Talwar have been featured in the 100 global thinkers’ list as well.
