TBI Blogs: 45 Days. 3 Talukas. One Competition: How Maharashtra’s Villagers Learned about Water Conservation

Water conservation is a pressing need in many parts of India. The Satyamev Jayate Water Cup was a competition that aimed to spread awareness and get more people involved in the efforts to preserve this precious natural resource.

Paani Foundation, a not-for-profit company co-founded by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, trained several hundred villagers from three talukas of Maharashtra on watershed management earlier this year, and then organised Satyamev Jayate Water Cup, a 45-day long competition, which saw a tidal wave of shramdan (voluntary labour). Thousands of watershed structures blossomed across the village landscape, creating an annual water storage capacity of 1,368 crore litres. This is the equivalent of 13,68,000 tankers of water, with a market value of Rs. 272 crores annually.

You can also view the Marathi version of the film (narrated by actor Atul Kulkarni) here.
