This 6-Year-Old Scaled Everest Base Camp and Gave Us Some Serious Climbing Goals

A six-year-old boy from Pune has set a record by becoming the youngest mountaineer from Maharashtra to reach the Mount Everest base camp, proving that one should never limit one’s dreams.

The student of Class 1, Advait Bhartiya reached the base camp on November 3 after a 13-day long expedition. The base camp is located in northeast Nepal, 17,593 feet above the sea level.

Advait is also the youngest Indian to reach the spot in winter. He was accompanied by his mother Payal Bhartiya, an avid trekker herself. “Initially, I had planned to go to the base camp alone but Advait insisted on joining me. I told him that he could join if he managed to train and prepare for it. His training included climbing 100 floors daily,” she told The Times of IndiaAdvait’s training went on for a month.

The toughest part of the climb for Advait was from Namche Bazaar in Nepal, the single highest climbing stretch in a day during the trek. Advait is a regular athlete and is also pursuing swimming and parkour. According to Payal, he completed his first five km run before turning three. After this, he wants to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Elbrus.

The trek was organised by Pune-based adventure and trekking company Adventure Pulse. 11-year-old Veerpratap Bhonsale completed the trek with Advait.

“For an adult, this is usually an incredible feat, with not just the mountain trails to deal with but also the thin air, reduction in atmospheric oxygen and subzero temperatures dropping to about 8 to -12 degrees C at times. But for young adventurers of this age, this truly has been an amazing achievement,” Sauraj Jhingan, co-founder of Adventure Pulse, told Sakal Times.

Presently, Delhi-based Harshit Saumitra holds the record of being the youngest person in India to reach the Everest base camp. He achieved this feat at the age of five in 2014. Gwalior-based siblings, 5-year-old Kandarp Sharma and his 8-year-old sister Ritvika, had successfully reached the base camp in 2015.
