How an Auto Driver from Karnataka Stopped a Man from Killing a Newborn Girl
Ramesh Hosa Amravat, a quick-thinking and alert auto driver in Hospete Taluk of Bellari district in Karnataka, saved a baby girl's life this Sunday. Here's how.
on Sunday night, a man in Hosapete Taluk of Bellari district in Karnataka hailed an auto. He was carrying a baby and told the driver that it is dead and he needs a ride to the burial ground. But the driver Ramesh Hosa Amravat, heard the baby crying on their way. He stopped the vehicle, grabbed the baby away, and started questioning the man.
“When he refused to show the baby’s face, I snatched the basket from him…I called my friends for help. The man confessed to the crime, shared the address of the hospital from where he had brought the baby,” Ramesh told The Times of India.
He also called up two of his friends and together they took the man back to the hospital. The rescued baby was later handed over to child protection authorities and is in the custody of a government run Shishugraha in Bellari.

It all started five days ago when 22-year-old Mallama was admitted into a private hospital in Hosapete. She was accompanied by the suspect, Shivarudra, who she claimed was her brother. According to the New Indian Express, the identity of this man and his relationship with the woman has not been established by the police yet. On Sunday, after the baby girl was born, Mallama allegedly got into a quarrel with the man who then snatched the baby from her.
While the Shivarudra fled away from the hospital, Ramesh and his friends filed a complaint at the Hosapete Police station. Female foeticide is rampant in Karnataka. According to the recent National Family Health Survey (NHFS) the sex ratio of children below the age of five in the state is 1,000 males to 910 females. If not for Ramesh’s good sense, this baby too would have been a part of these numbers.
The police are now looking for Shivaruda, and the woman who escaped and whose full address was not recorded. Good Samaritans like Ramesh restore one’s faith in humanity.
