Chetpet lake, situated in Chennai was faced with numerous threats of encroachment, thanks to contamination and neglect. With untreated sewage constantly disposed, beds of silt and chemical deposition drowned the lake off of it’s water leaving the lake to be avoided at all costs. Now people pay to visit the lake thanks to community efforts. Local fisheries took it upon themselves to save the shrinking lake from total wipe out.
Not only did they clean the lake, but they brought in varieties of fishes, had a park installed and are continuing to maintain it. Plans of installing a solar powered aquarium and a virtual reality centre are in the talks, due to the increasing number of visiting locals.
