The Indian Museum in Kolkata is launching an e-version of its beautiful exhibition titled Indian Buddhist Art.

It is also putting all of its galleries on 360 degree panoramic view through a tie up with Google Cultural Institute, a one of its kind online platform to make important cultural material easily available and accessible to every art-lover.

This will allow anyone to have a virtual walk through the gallery and see it as one does through one’s own eyes. One can even scroll to see the ceiling and the floor.

The sculpture of the head of Buddha from Sarnath, belonging to the fifth century, is the main highlight of this exhibition.

“This is the first virtual exhibition we are organising after which all our galleries will gradually be available on the Google Cultural Institute website,” said Jayanta Sengupta in an interview given to PTI.

For now, three galleries, including those on Buddhist sculptures, are ready for 360-degree panoramic viewing on the Internet.

“If it’s a painting then you can see all intricate details like even the brush strokes. Seeing a gigapixel image is like putting the object under microscope,” he added.

He also said that the virtual tour will give more information about the artefacts, as there are no space constraints in the virtual world.

The Indian Museum is over 200 years old and is the largest multi-purpose museum in Asia. It is spread over an area of 10,000 square feet, has 60 galleries on various subjects, and has over a lakh rare artefacts. Some amazing displays here include an Ashoka pillar, Egyptian mummy, Buddha’s ashes and unique collections of coins and meteorites.
