Cashless Payment of Toll Fee Is Here – At 275 Toll Plazas from Monday

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will make cashless payment mechanism operational at 275 toll plazas across the country from Monday. Known as FASTag, this mechanism will help in obtaining almost non-stop vehicle movement at toll plazas.

FASTag is a reloadable tag that is fixed on the windscreen of vehicles and leads to automatic deduction of toll charges with the help of radio-frequency identification technology (RFID).

A unique number on the FASTag is detected by a reader fixed in the dedicated electronic toll collection lanes of plazas. The tag is linked to a prepaid account from which the toll amount is deducted every time the vehicle passes through the plaza.

FASTag has a one-time fee of Rs. 200. NHIA will provide a 10% cash back incentive on toll payments for FASTag users in financial year 2016-17, and the cashback amount each month will be credited back to the users’ accounts at the beginning of next month. Customers will receive SMS alerts on their registered mobile numbers for all the transactions.

NHAI has tied up with ICICI bank and Axis bank for providing this service. “FASTag will be available on sale from selected toll plazas on National Highways and designated branches of participating banks from April 25. These can be recharged by making payments through cheque or online through credit card/debit card/NEFT/RTGS or through net-banking,” NHAI told PTI.

The minimum recharge amount is Rs. 100 and can be up to Rs.1 lakh for commercial vehicles.

Currently, India has 350 toll plazas. FASTag will become operational at the remaining toll plazas within a year. Details of participating banks (ICICI and Axis Bank in Phase-I), point of sale locations and frequently asked questions (FAQs) can be found on the website of NHAI and Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) – www.nhai.org and www.ihmcl.com.
