Singapore-based Debasmita Dasgputa has been working as a development professional for over a decade. Though she has always loved illustrating, it became a serious effort only in 2013.

Debasmita happened to listen to a TED talk by an Afghan woman Shabana Basij, who was recounting her experiences of living under the Taliban regime. In the video, Shabana says her father told her, “Remember, they can take everything from you, except your knowledge.” These words changed Shabana’s outlook to life. She went to the US to get an education and is now back in Afghanistan and is running a school.

After hearing Shabana’s story, Debasmita’s immediate reaction was to make an illustration on Shabana. She also ended up tracing Shabana online and mailed her the illustration. An overwhelmed Shabana shared Debasmita’s story with her students as well as their parents. Till date, Debasmita gets emails from Afghan men, talking about their daughters.

Debasmita is the creator of  ‘My Father Illustrations’. She showcases the positive stories women have about their fathers.

Debasmita finds her subjects through research or she chooses them from the mails she gets.

“Being the only child, I had a very close bond with my parents, especially my father who always inspired me to swim against the current. My father is a theatre actor & director. Sometimes I used to accompany him to his rehearsals and get completely bowled over seeing him bring together actors and orchestrate them to create art with a strong social message. That somehow became the foundation of my artistic existence and inspired me to find my purpose as an artist. And so began an urge do something meaningful with my education, my art, my resources, and surroundings,” she says.

Here are 15 of Debasmita’s illustrations.
