[VIDEO] This Ad Featuring an Acid Attack Survivor Will Make You Rethink the Meaning of Beauty

Laxmi, the survivor of an acid attack who is today a fierce campaigner for the rights of other women like her and one of the loudest voices demanding more stringent laws to prevent such attacks, now has a new feather in her cap.

She has been signed by clothing brand Viva N Diva as a brand ambassador; this will include modelling their clothing line. This is the first step in a campaign by the fashion label that eventually hopes to see more victims of acid attacks modelling fashion products.

In a global culture that has a very narrow definition of what constitutes “beauty”, this advertisement can send a powerful message to all women.

The campaign, described as “disturbing and inspiring” for the way in which it forces viewers to examine their own ideals and prejudices, aims to empower women like Laxmi so they don’t feel like “victims”. And neither is this any kind of charity — Laxmi is being treated like any other model, both in terms of payment and the actual shoot.

“People often laugh at our looks. Children get scared and call us ghosts. When such initiatives are undertaken, they make people understand that we, too, are like regular women. Although our faces have been ruined, beauty still lies within us,” Laxmi said to The Hindustan Times.
