10 Things You Must Know About Sonia Narang: The Badass IPS Officer Who Just Became DIG-CID
IPS officer Sonia Narang has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Known across Karnataka for the straightforward and honest manner in which she has solved many cases, and her zero tolerance for anyone who is found breaking the law – here are five interesting things to know about this officer.
IPS officer Sonia Narang has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in the Crime Investigation Department (CID), the premier investigation agency that is handling many important cases at the moment.
Known across Karnataka for the straightforward and honest manner in which she has solved many cases, and her zero tolerance for trouble makers, Sonia Narang believes that “all are equal before law”.
Here are ten interesting things to know about this iron-willed officer:
1. Joining civil services was a childhood dream for Narang.
Sonia Narang was born and brought up in Chandigarh.
“I had never thought of anything else. It was only civil services right from high school. After graduating, I started preparing for the UPSC exam. Even then, I used to read a lot of magazines on competitive exams whenever I found time,” she once said in an interview to The Indian Express.
2. She graduated from Punjab University in 1999, and is a gold medallist in Sociology.
3. Her father, A N Narang, retired as deputy superintendent of police and is her role model.
“Thanks to my father, I got to see from close quarters that a uniform commands respect. That is what made me pursue a career in the Indian Police Service,” she says.
4. She began her career as a probationer in 2004.
Narang was posted in Gulbarga district of Karnataka with the responsibility of managing the elections that were known for being infested with criminal activities.
5. Slapped an MLA and made headlines in 2006.
Narang was posted as the Superintendent of Police in Davangere in 2006. This was the time when city was witnessing a violent protest. Activists from the ruling party and the opposition, that is BJP and congress respectively, got engaged in some clashes. The officer ordered a lathi charge to avoid trouble. But BJP MLA, Renukacharya, refused to move. The officer lost her cool, slapped the MLA and put him behind bars. While many in the political circle took offence, she was highly admired by the public for her courage. The MLA also tried to get her transferred from his area, but was unsuccessful.
6. Became the first woman Superintendent of Police of Belgaum district.
Her duties in Belgaum included maintaining law and order in a communally sensitive area, and she worked day and night, travelling to every corner of the city to keep anti-social elements in check.
7. And was the second woman cop in the history of Karnataka to be the Deputy Commissioner (South Division) of Bangalore.
“Honesty and courage are powerful weapons in governance. If we possess these two, no one can influence you, however powerful he or she might be,” she once said.
8. In 2013, she answered the CM in style.
Chief Minister K. Siddaramaiah accused Narang of being involved in the Rs. 16,000 crore mining scam. Following this, she issued a statement to the media, saying that she never encouraged illegal mining in the state.
“This is with reference to the news item, which highlighted that the honourable CM has stated in the legislative assembly that I have helped illegal miners. In this connection, I would like to strongly refute the allegation that I have helped illegal mining. I have never worked in the areas where illegal mining was being done, be it Bellary, Chitradurga or any other such place. So where is the question of helping or encouraging illegal mining? Nor have I worked in the mining department ever,” she said in a statement, leaving the CM embarrassed.
9. And exposed the extortion racket functioning within the Lokayukta office.
She was one of the officers instrumental in exposing corruption in the Lokayukta office that led to the resignation of Justice Y Bhaskar Rao as Karnataka Lokayukta, and got his son Y. Ashwin arrested.
10. Her husband, Ganesh Kumar, is a Bihar cadre IPS officer and they have a son.
