A Rajasthan Couple Wanted a Daughter. The Universe Conspired to Give Them One in a Historical Way.

Himanshi, a miracle baby, was delivered just after 24 weeks of pregnancy and weighed only 465 gm at the time of birth. Today, after six months of constant treatment, she weighs 2.9 kg, is healthy, and has gone home with her Rajasthan based parents.

Six months ago, a girl child was born to a Rajasthan based couple in Sterling Hospital of Ahmedabad. She was delivered just after 24 weeks of pregnancy and weighed only 465 gm. Today, after several months of constant treatment, the miracle baby named Himanshi is completely healthy. She weighs 2.9 kg and has been sent back home.

In what turned out to be medical marvel, the child survived after spending the first six months of her life in neonatal intensive care unit.

The doctors had advised an emergency delivery as the foetus was not receiving adequate blood supply in the womb. Born on June 5, she was breathing with the help of artificial respiratory system for almost four months. The treatment was challenging. Himanshi was being fed with intravenous fluids and was facing a risk of liver failure. The doctors had to remove 100 to 150 ml of liquid from her stomach every four hours. According to Dr Ashish Mehta, who treated the child for six months, this case is the first of its kind in India where a premature child has survived after six months of treatment.

Apart from being a remarkable case in medical history, Himanshi is also a sign of hope and positivity in today’s society where many families still don’t welcome a girl child.

Himanshi’s mother, 39-year-old Anuradha Vyas, had been advised to abort the child because of several complications. But her wish for a daughter was strong enough to beat nature’s odds. She had been living in a guest house in Ahmedabad, paying a rent of Rs. 1,000 for the last six months. A Jodhpur based lawyer, Anuradha has faced several loses in the past. She lost her two-month-old daughter due to a lung infection last year, and has gone through three miscarriages before that.

“Her heart-beats were constantly telling me to keep her alive. Many doctors had advised me to abort my child, but I told them that until my child’s heart was beating, I would not leave her. Girls should be saved in the interest of society. My mother is saying she will make my daughter a neonatologist like the doctor who treated and saved her” she told The Times of India.

Hailing from the state of Rajasthan, which has a skewed sex ratio of only 893 women per 1,000 men, this couple has set an example by fighting hard for their daughter’s life.
