Sikh Group Helps 25 Drought-Hit Families. To Adopt Entire Village in Maharashtra

Members of a Sikh group have extended their support to many families affected by the draught in Latur district of Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Sikh Association members visited many places in Marathwada and saw the plight of draught-affected farmers in the region. They realised that an immediate intervention was required to help 25 of the families there, and instantly provided them with the necessary financial support.

Marathwada witnesses hundreds of farmer suicides every year. In 2014 alone, about 422 farmers in the region committed suicide.

In fact, only a few days ago, a girl from Marathwada committed suicide because she did not have enough money to buy a monthly pass for a government bus. The Sikh group met the girl’s family and have decided to take care of her sister’s education.

Going a step further, they are also planning to adopt an entire village. They will focus on its sustainable development and will make the required changes to ensure that people do not face any kind of water crisis.

Mal Malkit Singh, spokesperson of Maharashtra Sikh Association, said that they will build check dams to eliminate water shortage in the area during summers. As of now, the group’s focus is to keep the drought-affected families alive and they hope that more people will take inspiration from them and provide the much needed support.
