IGNOU to Offer Diploma & Certificate Courses in RTI

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon start diploma and certificate courses in the Right to Information Act (RTI). The courses are expected to be rolled out by July 2016 and Jan 2017, and will be compulsory for all central government employees.

IGNOU, Delhi, has always been one step ahead of other academic institutions when it comes to introducing new courses of social relevance. From providing degrees to jail inmates to conducting courses for defence personnel, IGNOU has been an innovator in the field of education.

In yet another impressive move, IGNOU has decided to roll out certificate and diploma courses in the Right to Information (RTI).

Many people are willing to use the RTI tool but are unaware of the technicalities – like how to go about the process, how to frame the questions, how and where to make further appeals, etc. – of using it. The IGNOU courses will help fill this gap in knowledge.

Currently, the courses are under development with support from the Central Information Commission (CIC).

The Faculty of Public Administration at IGNOU’s School of Social Sciences, and experts from CIC, are currently working on the curriculum of the course. The certificate course is expected to be rolled out by July 2016. This will be followed by the diploma course which will be introduced in January 2017.

The university has already worked out the details of the Post Graduate Diploma in Right to Information (PGDRTI) and is currently working on the certificate course.

The PGDRTI will be a 36 credits programme comprising four elective courses and a field-based project.

The course will be mandatory for all government employees.
