21 Construction Workers Built a School in Punjab. And the School Did This to Honour Them Forever

Do you remember the labourers who built the house you currently live in? Or can you recall anything about those hard working people who constructed the building in which you have been studying or working since years? Well, most probably not.
We hardly thank those construction workers. The names that we most often see right after entering the building belongs to the trustees or other prominent personalities.
But a government school in Sangrur, Punjab, has put names of the 21 construction labourers on the foundation stone of its building. These include the names of carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians and painters, who have jointly constructed the school.

Another thought provoking step taken by the school is that the building was not inaugurated by a politician or a prominent personality, but by two class XII toppers – Jaspreet Kaur and Sarabjeet Kaur.
The idea to honour the labourers was introduced by an Aam Aadmi Party MP, Bhagwant Mann, who had donated funds for the construction of the building. The school authority has also mentioned Mann’s name at the bottom of the plaque, after the names of all the labourers.
The plaque reads, “With Rs. 20 lakh provided under MPLAD funds, construction of building of Government Senior Secondary School was accomplished by workers (names of all 21 mentioned on top) from February 23, 2015 to July 10, 2015.”
Not only did the labourers feel honoured after this step, but they also received a new recognition in their community.
We hope to see this truly remarkable gesture being replicated at other places too. Till then, three cheers for the Sangrur school and the man who made it possible!
