Visiting the North East? The Region Has 2 New Broad Gauge Trains Now

A trip to the North Eastern states of India will now be easier to plan as Indian Railways has inaugurated two  new broad gauge passenger trains reaching the eastern most railway station of the country.

A journey to North Eastern states of India will now be easier, thanks to the better connectivity being initiated by Indian Railways.

On Monday, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated two broad gauge passenger trains to Murgongselek, which is the eastern most railway station of the country located on the north bank of the River Brahmaputra in Assam, and to Bhalukpong in Arunachal Pradesh.

The new train services were flagged off by the Railway Minister remotely through video conferencing from Rail Bhawan, Delhi. The trains include:

  • Guwahati- Murgongselek Inter-City Express
  • Dekargaon- Bhalukpong passenger trains
  • An extension of Rangiya-Rangapara North Passenger train up to Dekargaon
  • An extension of Dekargaon-Harmuti Passenger train up to Murgongselek

The frequency of Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express has also been increased from being bi-weekly to weekly.

Earlier this year, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar was also connected with Delhi through a direct train. The Railway Minister said that it is a “Golden Day” in the history of Arunachal Pradesh and the increased rail connectivity will bring prosperity in the lives of people there.

As of now, only the capitals of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are on broad gauge network, and capital of Tripura is connected with meter gauge. Agartala is also all set to be on broad gauge network by March, 2016.

Here is hoping for a better connected India.
