India’s Longest Tunnel to Open in 2016, Shortening Distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 30km

By July 2016, India’s longest tunnel shall become accessible to the general public. This tunnel, connecting Jammu to Srinagar, cuts down distance by an impressive 30 km and shall make travelling across seasons easier.

Next year, the distance between Jammu and Srinagar will be shortened by 30 km and travel during difficult times of the year, such as the rainy season or winters, will also become easier.

This will happen after India’s longest tunnel opens up to the general traffic.

The tunnel is 9.2 km long and is a part of the 286 km-long four-laning project of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. This tunnel will also reduce the traffic burden on National Highway 1A.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is also planning on building a parallel tunnel, to serve as an escape route in case evacuation of commuters becomes necessary. The escape tunnel will be available for use only for pedestrians.

Ventilation has been a part of the plan, considering the length of the tunnel. It will also include parking spots, keeping in mind breaking down of cars en route and, thus, the need for towing them away.

It is all set to open up to the public by July 2016.
