Now waitlisted rail passengers who fail to get their tickets confirmed can covert it into an airline ticket at competitive fares.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the subsidy of Indian Railways, has tied up with budget airlines like GoAir and SpiceJet who will offer tickets to the waitlisted rail passengers at a lower price than the prevailing spot prices.
The facility is available only for train routes that are also served by airlines. The scheme will only be applicable to the tickets booked at least three days prior to the date of the journey. In case the rail tickets do not get confirmed, the flight tickets would be made available only for the day of the train journey or a day after that.
To get the benefits of this scheme, passengers must be on wait list after the chart is prepared.

They’ll then be sent e-mails by IRCTC, following which they can cancel the train ticket and visit air.irctc.co.in to book plane tickets if available. Passengers from sleeper class to AC can utilise the scheme.
Indian Railways has already sold 100 tickets of GoAir under this scheme in the past one month. SpiceJet will start offering the tickets from July.
The prices of these tickets will be 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the regular fares. Most domestic flights fly with 20 to 25 percent empty seats. These unsold tickets will be placed with IRCTC, who plans to make good use of them.
The news has been welcomed by the passengers, who now have an added option to travel.
