Inspired by Father, 6-YO Nagpur Girl Donates 4800 School Bags to Needy Kids
After watching her father donating food and clothes to flood survivors, little Tunisha asked him, "But you did not collect schools bags, books or stationery for the children. How will they go to school now?”
Six-year-old Tunisha Khushroo Poacha from Nagpur had always seen her father, Khushroo, support the needy through his NGO Seva Kitchen.
Recently, she saw him donating food and clothes to flood survivors and asked him why he did not collect school bags, books or stationery for the children.
“I told her it was an oversight on my part and urged her to do something herself. She thought about it and proposed that she would donate schools bags to everyone,” Khushroo shares with The Better India.
“My daddy gave them groceries and clothes. So I said why cannot I give them school bags?” says Tunisha with a cute smile.
Initially, her father dismissed Tunisha’s proposal as mere childish banter, but soon he realised that she was extremely serious.
“I asked her an exact number—100, 200, 1000 or 5000? She chose the largest number without a second thought,” says Khushroo.
In just two months since then, Tunisha, with the help of her father, has managed to send around 1000 bags to the NGO Goonj. Low-income government schools across Nagpur and its suburbs have received over 1800 bags.
“Today itself we are sending 2000 bags to farmers’ children in Melghat,” informs Khushroo.
5000 Bags of Kindness
The genesis of the bag collection initiative lies in an earlier conversation between Tunisha and Khushroo.
A while ago, her uncle had gifted her a magic slate, and one day, as she was busy sketching, a sudden thought crossed her mind.
“Papa, why don’t we make such magic slates for the needy kids. They can do so much drawing even without crayons. They will have so much fun!” she exclaimed.
When Khushroo pointed out that they could not make so many magic slates themselves, Tunisha decided to think of an alternative way to help needy children, and that is how she arrived at the initiative she has christened as “The Bags of Kindness.”
Donors generally order school bags online and send it to the Poacha’s address.
The drive commenced from 2nd October 2019, marking the commencement of the Daan Utsav or Joy of Giving Week. The success of the endeavour prompted little Tunisha to continue it further on a larger scale, and they have no intention of stopping anytime soon!
The Class 1 student at Bhavan’s Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Nagpur exclaims her immense joy after sending the school bags. “I wish to give them water bottles and tiffin boxes after this,” she shares.
