If I ask you to recommend an apparel shopping website, it won’t take you more than a few seconds to list your favourites.
The same goes for accessories or food delivery.
How about sustainable, eco-friendly products? You might have to think harder for this one.
Interestingly, over 19,000 e-commerce platforms are registered in India. And yet only a few can name platforms whose stated goal is helping make the planet a better place.
With Karnival.com, we are trying to change that by curating 1000+ products made by 700+ micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at the click of a button.
(Why MSMEs and online shopping? You can read about it here.)
Now we are not claiming to be the only ones in the game. It’s not that lonely in the green club.
But there is something unique. Karnival.com is not specific to personal care products or home decor or food. Our goal is to be a one-stop-shop for all this and more, so you don’t have to keep switching tabs for your monthly shopping.
The concept of extensive ‘choice’ does seem to be at odds with shopping and eco-living.
This is not true.
The concept of eco-living may give you that impression initially, but it is certainly not a shop with only monocoloured t-shirts on display. It is still a mall with thousands of items to choose from.
Sustainable living also gives a sense of minimalism, which to many, translates to highly restricted options. In reality, ‘minimalism’ is another lifestyle choice altogether where you opt to limit the number of things you purchase. The pursuit of sustainability need not be that. Here, you are ensuring your choices cause minimal harm to the planet.
You can switch to a planet-friendly living while still being spoilt for choice. Take women’s hygiene, for example. Ordinary disposable sanitary pads are not just harmful to the planet but can also cause itches and infections to the user.
What are the alternatives? Reusable cloth pads, disposable pads made of eco-friendly material or a menstrual cup, all are equally viable options during those difficult days.
The challenge is to replace the label of “options” and bring these products in the purview of the mainstream. This is what Karnival.com hopes to do for you.
One criticism that we receive from our patrons is that of prices.
“Why so costly”, they comment, and we understand the plight. Mass-produced items are bound to be cheaper.
While we understand that we are asking you to spend more of your hard-earned money, we are also requesting you to see what role that money is playing.
It is helping millions of artisans, small businesses, traders and social entrepreneurs uplift dying arts, innovate planet-saving remedies and manufacture sustainable products.
Just a few extra rupees from your side has the power to do all this!
Here’s hoping that Karnival.com is just the beginning of a country that strives to be eco-friendly before anything else and spoils customers with enticing options that keep us all healthy.
