Got Pimples or Acne? This 60-YO Grandmom’s Hand-Made Soaps Are Perfect for You!
"Instead of buying expensive products, I would, for example, use oranges for clients who had a lack of Vitamin C. All my clients would be thrilled at my home-made packs and I was satisfied with the knowledge that I wasn’t cheating them."
Medha Arun Raju owned a salon in the hearts of Chennai. Every day, she would meet clients who complained about extremely dry skin, haunting acne, stubborn dandruff, terrible hair fall and an overall disintegration of their once smooth skin.
Medha would suggest they get facial packs or hair packs according to their needs. Unlike your average ‘parlour aunty’ though, she would not recommend any expensive treatments. She went the natural way.

“Our grandmothers’ recipes seemed to work well with most skin types. And I was always a strong advocate of all-natural products. So instead of buying expensive products, I would use oranges for clients who had a lack of Vitamin C in their skin. I added Papaya peels to my face pack directly. All my clients would be thrilled at my home-made packs, and I was satisfied with the knowledge that I wasn’t cheating them,” she informs The Better India.

A spa-professional turned eco-entrepreneur:
After thirty years of getting a hands-on experience on a diverse clientele, Medha started nurturing a dream of starting her product line. After all, why should the amazing products she makes be limited to her faithful clients in Chennai? Especially when it could travel across India!
“Since I’d made so many face scrubs and packs as part of my spa routine, I started the ‘Essence Of Earth‘ with those products. It was only a matter of time before I leapt into the manufacturing of soaps. The label was established in 2009, and for the past ten years, I have been developing about 24 varieties of soaps, hair oils, massage oils etc.” she says.
Look carefully at the soaps by ‘Essence of Earth’. You will see chunks of the natural ingredients making up for the goodness of the cosmetics.
For instance, the coconut soap has actual shavings of the coconuts. Not merely extracts.

The goodness of grandma’s soaps:
The ‘Essence of Earth‘ is a cottage industry that runs solely on the expertise of Medha. Medha single-handedly runs the production of all their products.
While her husband helps in accounting, four other helping hands are involved in packaging. She tells TBI, “If you ask me a number, I make an average of 120 soaps every day. I do all the blending, mixing and pouring. No machines. Of course, on some days, we have to turn focus to make 50-100 hair oil bottles or make more soaps, if the demand is so.”
Her products have had a grateful clientele in hotels too. One happy customer, Syed Ahamed, also took to social media to praise her soaps.
“The tea tree and clove soap bars are very effective for my daughter’s eczema. She has tried so many other brands with no results. The natural ingredients are also very moisturizing, and the scent is pleasant. Everyone in our family loves the ‘Essence of Earth’ soaps!” he says.
