What you can expect from the Bengaluru Diwali workshop:

Your day will be full of interesting activities, from making lamps on a potter’s wheel to trying your hand at making gujiya and peda! Everyone is welcome to the Bengaluru workshop and why not bring your pets along too (if you promise they won’t bite)!

The event is hosted by Village Story, an organisation started with the aim to promote responsible farm tourism, events to connect you to your roots as well as responsible Indian festivals. The day-long workshop will be held in an open farm in an urban village so be ready to encounter cows, dogs, and hens!

In the first hour, you will take a tour of the urban village in Bengaluru and visit small scale industries. Then, Rekha Chawla who has been associated with Village Story since its inception in 2017, will conduct the sweet-making workshop. This will be followed by a farm-fresh lunch and then diya-making workshop by Poornima, a Terracotta artisan who established Terra Barn in Bengaluru in 2002.

Take a walk through the Bengaluru village:

Anamika Bist, the founder of Village Story informs, “Small scale industries are vanishing and people who are used to purchasing the end product rarely know how these items are made. We will begin our day by walking through the urban village and visiting these industries based inside houses and sheds and run by family members. From a power loom that weaves sarees to an “industry” that makes banana chips and chocolates to those making areca plant plates, we will get an opportunity to interact with the villagers running them.”

Prepare your Diwali sweets at home:

Since Rekha joined Village Story, her food has been the hot favourite with everyone who visits the urban village. This Diwali, the popular chef will give you tips on making delicious moong halwa, kesar peda and gujiya. “Those sweets will be your dessert with lunch!” Anamika shares.

The Diya Making workshop by Terra Barn:

Poornima takes rural Karnataka women under her wing and trains them at Terra Barn to make terracotta jewellery. “While teaching them the craft we also support them with our marketing processes. The core aim is to revive the dying art form while also empowering local women,” Poornima tells The Better India.

As part of this workshop, Poornima and her team will show you how to make a lamp on a potter’s wheel after a detailed explanation of the technique. “Once you make the diyas, they will be put in the furnace for baking but since this takes a lot of time, we have a few diyas prepared for you to paint and decorate. These are yours to take!” she smiles.

Also, if you want to do a good deed on this grand festival, then bring along old clothes, toys and books which the Village Story will donate to rural children!
