TBI Shifts Shop On The Back Of A Year Of Super Growth!

This article is part of our ‘TBI Corner’ where we speak to you, our reader, directly. This is all about what we’re doing as a brand, our take on various topics, and what’s up at TBI. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

TBI Shifts Shop On The Back Of A Year Of Super Growth!

Shifting homes is always an emotional affair – whether it is far away or even within the same city. It means saying goodbye to a way of life and abandoning the comfort of familiarity, even as beautiful memories sting the eyes.

But, a move also signifies change.

When I first joined The Better India at the office on humble 4th Cross Road, I was stoked to see that it was a sprawling house.

For someone coming from a corporate IT giant, this was so cool. An office in a house? Amazing!

The bungalow exuded cosiness. Its small front garden and backyard had over 20 trees. Sure, it had all the problems any independent house has, but it was perfect to us.

And with all of us working together for a common mission, it emphasised the feeling of being one big family.

We had a lot of fun there.

But just about a year later, it became necessary to shift the office to accommodate TBI’s burgeoning team and ambitions. The need to grow was driving everything.

The growth at TBI has been phenomenal in the last one year. Here’s what happened.

1. First and foremost, TBI has entered an entirely new domain of impact. Many of you would have seen our brand-new e-commerce site, but you may not be aware of the reason.

It has been our mission thus far to spread positivity and impact through content, and it has brought us this far and created a platform for us.

We are now using this platform to curate products that are made by and support small businesses, rural businesses, farmers, artisans, and marginalised communities.

But that isn’t all, these products are also eco-friendly. We want to support environmental sustainability in a HUGE way by helping people replace most of their daily use items with eco-friendly versions.

This two-pronged approach (increasing income of producers and promoting sustainability) has the potential of solving for many problems at once!

2. To achieve these goals, the team has expanded at an amazing rate. From just about 30 people this time last year, we are (at the time of writing this article) at 62. That’s double the team strength in just one year!

That includes completely new roles created for the new e-commerce division and an in-house tech team. New people seem to be joining almost every day!

3. Fueling this expansion, TBI has received funding from India’s largest impact fund, Elevar Equity. This funding will help us grow our e-commerce division very quickly and thus serve more merchants, bring more sustainable products to you, and enable all of us to create more impact every day.

4. TBI has bagged a total of six awards in the last year, appeared in eight major publications, and was even mentioned in the Prime Ministers national address on ‘PM’s Mann ki Baat’.

5. And finally, to accommodate the growing team, we had to leave our little house and garden and move to a much bigger space in the centre of the city.

We are slowly turning it into “our” office.

Despite these dramatic changes, our focus remains firmly on impact. New growth means new responsibilities and a renewal of old responsibilities. We will be chasing this goal of creating impact with more vigour than ever.

Keep watching this space for more inspiring articles, more impactful campaigns (Want to save a lake? Here’s how!), and bigger and better video series (check out Sustainable Homes and The Big Steps).

And don’t forget to check in back at the shop every now and then to see what beautiful new products we have for you.

The last year has been an exhilarating journey. It’s like when a plane takes off and you get jolted into the back of your seat.

But while planes eventually level out, we’ll be hitting the accelerator even harder. I guess I should have used “rocket” in that metaphor. Because at this point – the sky’s the limit.
