As residents of Bengaluru, Malini Parmar and Smita Kulkarni were accustomed to seeing smouldering piles of garbage dotting the city’s landscape and polluting its air. On taking a closer look, they found these mountains of trash contained everything from vegetable peels and fabric waste to plastic bags and rubber tyres.
Used sanitary pads were also present in large numbers–standing out like lurid neon dots against the black mountains.
In 2015, the two decided to take matters into their own hands and find a solution to the problem of sanitary waste.
They launched StoneSoup – a company that manufactures menstrual cups, which are a substitute for single-use pads and tampons. Made of medical grade-silicone, these cups are superior–both from the standpoint of women’s health and from an environmental perspective. They offer all the convenience of disposables, plus they’re safe, economical and durable.
