Keep An Eye Out, Students! CBSE to Add Artificial Intelligence as an Elective Shortly
A recent meeting of the board’s governing body decided that the subject would be introduced in classes 8, 9 and 10 as a skill subject.
Evolving with the needs and technologies of the time is something which will help elementary education stay relevant, and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a way to do so.
Keeping the future in mind, the board is all set to introduce a new elective subject for students of classes 8, 9 and 10.
A member of the board’s governing body told Hindustan Times, “The decision to introduce artificial intelligence as a skill subject was taken at a recent meeting of the board’s governing body. It has been decided that the subject would be introduced in classes 8, 9 and 10 as a skill subject.”
The idea germinated during a recent session held at NITI Aayog.
The objective is to keep students abreast with the technologies of the present and the developments of the future, helping shape their career more efficiently. This elective will be optional, and will come under the skill subject category, the board member informed.
Soon after, the CBSE followed it up by holding consultation meetings with stakeholders, which included the representative of a school that was already teaching the subject.
”If required, the board will also help in the capacity building of schools for the teaching-learning of the new subject from the next academic session,” the member of the board added.

AI constitutes an advanced technology which allows a machine the ability to think, learn and perform tasks much like humans, tasks which require human intelligence and understanding like speech recognition, visual perception or decision-making skills. Through AI, these can now be performed by the machine.
Currently, there are more than 20,000 CBSE schools across the country, and around 220 schools affiliated from other countries. Such a bold move, with proper implementation, is hoped to bring positive reform to one of the most crucial sectors in the country!
