100 Gbps by 2019: 4 ISRO Satellites to Introduce Game-Changing Internet Speed!

There is a reason why the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) remains one of India’s most revered institutions. For the most part, they deliver effective results utilising minimal resources.

Their latest promise to the general public is that by the end of 2019 they will deliver internet speeds of over 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) to households and offices all the country with the launch of four heavy-duty communications satellites, according to the Times of India.

“The launch of four high-throughput satellites will provide the country broadband connectivity of 100 Gbps by next year GSAT-19 was already launched in June last year, GSAT-29 will be launched by November and GSAT-11 (ISRO’s heaviest satellite weighing over 5.7 tonnes) will be launched from French Guyana by December. The launch of GSAT-20 has been scheduled next year,” ISRO Chairman K Sivan told the daily publication.

“Together, all these satellites will provide high-speed internet connectivity in the country, especially in rural area, and help bridge the digital divide,” he added.

Unlike past satellites that use a broad single beam, the new ones will employ multiple spot beams, increasing internet speed and improving coverage across the entire country.

For its 500 million internet users, India hasn’t done too well in mobile internet speed and fixed broadband speed, ranking 109 and 76 respectively in the world, as per Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index last November. On an average, mobile internet speeds hover around 8 Mbps and 18.82 Mbps for broadband. These ISRO satellites are hoping to change the game for India.

Having said that, other efforts are on to improve internet speeds in India, particularly the use of Li-Fi technology. Li-Fi is a technology for seamless wireless communication between devices using a light source like LED bulbs to transmit data. It is widely believed that Li-Fi technology can deliver internet speeds in the range of 10 Gbps.
