Nagaland Floods: Another State Needs Our Aid, Here’s How You Can Help
Amazingly, the state has been suffering its own disaster for a month now, but still contributed Rs 1 crore for Kerala Flood Relief.
After Kerala, it’s about time we turned our attention towards Nagaland, which, for the past month, has been witness to incessant rainfall causing severe floods and landslides all over the state.
Thus far, 12 people have died, and more than 3000 families have been displaced across 400 villages, according to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority.
“The damage this year is unprecedented in the history,” Temjen Toy, Chief Secretary, Nagaland, told Hindustan Times. Mind you, this is the same state that had contributed Rs 1 crore for Kerala flood relief earlier this month – even though it was battling a natural disaster of its own.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio reached out to the Centre yesterday, seeking immediate flood relief and assistance. For immediate assistance, the State government has demanded an initial sum of Rs 219 crore.

However, officials in the state claim that this demand can rise to Rs 400 crore even though the total damage in the state has been pegged around Rs 800 crore.

Despite the devastation, vast swathes of Northeast India have witnessed deficit rainfall. According to the Regional Meteorological Department Centre in Guwahati, Nagaland has seen a 26% deficit this season until August 29.
“It is the nature of the rainfall which is disruptive. It pours 100 mm in one hour,” Johnny Asin, officer on special duty, disaster management, at the Nagaland government, told the Hindustan Times.
Flooding in the state is due to heavy rainfall in the northern reaches of the state, leaving the Doyang Hydroelectric project in Wokha district unable to hold onto water any longer. Water released from the dam has caused serious flooding downstream.
Thus far, three districts remain cut off, and according to Toy, “the state of affairs is so sad that the main Dimapur to Kohima national highway is blocked.”

“About 359 locations of roads have been totally cut-off sending the state into an emergency situation,” said Johnny, speaking to the publication.

Although all districts are affected, Kiphere, which borders Myanmar, is the worst affected.
