Arputham, who has spent his life in Bombay’s slums working to improve the lives of the city’s millions of shantytown dwellers, is one of five people who has won this year’s Magsaysay award for public service. The awards, named after former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, are given annually to Asians who have excelled in public service.
